QuberTech Raises £3.4M To Advance Sustainable Natural Rubber Production

The company is developing sustainable natural rubber using specially engineered dandelions as an alternative to traditional rubber sources.

Natural rubber is an important material used in industries such as automotive, healthcare, manufacturing and defence. However, most of the world’s rubber supply comes from imported sources in a few tropical regions, which are facing challenges like climate change, plant diseases, political uncertainty and stricter environmental rules.

QuberTech’s biotechnology platform enables the cultivation of high-yield dandelions capable of producing premium natural rubber and other valuable bio-based compounds in controlled environments.

Compared with conventional rubber trees, which require years to mature and are restricted to tropical climates, dandelions can be grown faster and closer to manufacturing hubs through scalable local production systems.

Beyond rubber, the platform also supports the development of bio-based materials with applications in food, cosmetics, sustainable packaging, and advanced materials.

QuberTech has additionally received backing through Defra’s Farming Innovation Programme, delivered with Innovate UK, highlighting the role of biotechnology and precision breeding in building more resilient and sustainable supply chains.
