London-based robotics startup Machenta has raised $40 million in seed funding. The company is developing AI technology designed to help robots learn physical tasks more quickly.
SUMMARY
- Machenta has raised $40 million in seed funding, reportedly the largest seed round for a UK robotics startup.
- The round was co-led by Creandum and Union Square Ventures.
- Machenta was co-founded by Edward Johns, a professor at Imperial College London, and his PhD student Vitalis Vosylius.
Machenta was co-founded by a robotics professor and his student. The startup aims to make it easier and faster to train robots to perform real-world tasks.
Creandum and Union Square Ventures co-led the funding round. According to the company, this is the largest seed funding round raised by a robotics startup in the UK to date.
Machenta has emerged from stealth with the funding announcement, bringing its technology into the public eye. The company aims to advance robot training by using AI to help robots learn and carry out physical tasks more efficiently.

Johns said: “Intelligence is not so much about what you can already do, it’s about how quickly you can learn to do something new. Humans don’t need to see the same thing over and over before they can do it. If you take some objects, and show somebody what to do with them, they’ll probably then be able to do the same task immediately. We’ve spent years trying to understand what it would take for robots to learn at the speed of a human. That is what instant robot learning is about.”
London-based Machenta was co-founded by Edward Johns, a professor of robot learning at Imperial College London, and his PhD student Vitalis Vosylius.
The startup is developing an AI model that helps robots learn new tasks quickly. Traditional robot training methods can be costly and time-consuming because they often require many demonstrations.
Johns describes the approach as “physical vibe coding,” where robots can learn how to perform tasks almost immediately.
Machenta has trained its AI model using computer simulations and virtual environments without relying on real-world data.
The company will use the new funding to develop its technology further and expand its team. Machenta currently has around a dozen employees working from its office in King’s Cross, London.
