Gravis Robotics Raises €172 Million Series A to Expand Autonomous Construction Machines Globally

Gravis Robotics, a Zurich-based company developing autonomous construction machines and physical AI technology, has raised €172 million ($200 million) in Series A funding. The entire funding round was backed by SoftBank Group.

Gravis Robotics will also invest in engineering and machine learning talent. The company plans to expand its retrofitting infrastructure so its operating system can be integrated into construction machines and infrastructure networks around the world.

Ryan Luke Johns, co-founder and CEO of Gravis Robotics, says: “It’s not about taking operators out of the machine. It’s about getting machines to be 30 percent more productive, to get an operator to drive multiple highly productive machines.”

Archie Muirhead, Partner at IQ Capital (investor in the 2025 raise), said: “Ryan and the Gravis team identified a fundamental constraint facing construction at a time when demand for new infrastructure from compute to energy is accelerating – a shortage of skilled operators. Leveraging years of reinforcement learning and control policy research at ETH Zurich, Gravis’s technology is already delivering measurable productivity gains on live projects across four continents.

Gravis Robotics was founded by Ryan Luke Johns (CEO) and Dr. Dominic Jud (CTO) after spinning out of ETH Zurich’s Robotic Systems Lab in 2022. The company develops an AI-powered operating system that turns traditional heavy construction machines into autonomous robots.

Gravis uses AI models trained on billions of cubic yards of simulated earth-moving data. This technology helps construction machines understand changing environments and safely move, break, and reshape soil without needing constant human control.
