Finnish space-tech startup Aavuus secures Pre-Seed funding to improve space debris tracking and orbital safety

Finnish space technology startup Aavuus, which is developing infrastructure to improve orbital safety, has secured Pre-Seed funding from Maki.vc.
The company is building a global network of ground-based laser stations designed to significantly enhance the tracking of objects in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). By exceeding the capabilities of current commercial tracking systems, Aavuus aims to deliver a new level of precision and detection performance for the space industry.
Its technology is expected to provide faster and more accurate orbital data, helping satellite operators improve space situational awareness and make better-informed collision avoidance decisions.

Aavuus is tackling a growing challenge as Earth's orbit becomes increasingly crowded. According to the European Space Agency (ESA), more than 1.2 million pieces of space debris larger than one centimetre are currently orbiting the planet, while only a small proportion are actively tracked. Debris measuring between 1 and 10 centimetres represents a major risk because it is often too small and numerous for existing systems to monitor consistently, yet large enough to seriously damage or destroy satellites upon impact.
As collision avoidance manoeuvres become increasingly common in busy low-Earth orbits, the gap between operators' needs and current tracking capabilities continues to widen. Aavuus aims to bridge this gap with its advanced tracking infrastructure.
The company is a spinout of the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute, bringing deep expertise in satellite laser ranging and space geodesy to address challenges that have so far exceeded the capabilities of commercial tracking solutions.
Aavuus has also strengthened its leadership team with the appointment of former U.S. Army Aerospace Defence Officer Brian Dunne as Chief Commercial Officer. His experience in aerospace defence and threat management is expected to help the company meet growing demand from both commercial and defence-sector customers.
According to Joonas Jokela, CEO, Aavuus:

Aavuus is currently focused on developing its first minimum viable product (MVP) and delivering the technology to early customers for initial testing and validation.
