SUMMARY

  • Primogene, a Leipzig-based biotech startup, has raised €4.1 million in Seed funding to scale its platform for the sustainable and scalable production of complex, high-value molecules.

The round was led by High-Tech Gründerfonds, with participation from Technologiegründerfonds Sachsen, better ventures, Sächsische Beteiligungsgesellschaft, Golzern Holding GmbH, FS Life Science Investment GmbH, and Marc Struhalla, founder and CEO of c-LEcta GmbH.

The funding will be used to expand its intellectual property portfolio, strengthen strategic partnerships, and increase production capabilities to support industrial-scale applications.

Primogene, founded in 2023 by Reza Mahour, Valerian Grote, and Linda Karger, develops biomolecules that are identical to natural compounds but produced sustainably, cost-efficiently, and at industrial scale.

The company focuses on enzymatic biomanufacturing processes to produce functional ingredients for nutrition, personal care and pharmaceutical raw materials.

A key focus is human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), particularly disialyllacto-N-tetraose (DSLNT), a complex molecule with important clinical benefits for premature infants.

Primogene’s enzymatic platform is designed to overcome limitations of traditional fermentation methods which are capital-intensive, costly to operate, and biologically constrained when producing highly complex molecules at scale.

“The capital will enable us to build the next phase of Primogene by scaling production, growing the team, and accelerating the industrial launch of our products,” said Dr.-Ing. Reza Mahour, CEO and co-founder of Primogene.

“Our goal is to make complex ingredients accessible at scale and thereby support human health at every age,” said Linda Karger, COO and co-founder of Primogene.
