Austrian cleantech startup SALZSTROM has raised over $1 million in pre-seed funding to develop its sodium-ion battery technology, aiming to offer a European-made alternative to lithium-ion batteries.
SUMMARY
- Austrian cleantech startup SALZSTROM has raised over $1 million in pre-seed funding to develop its sodium-ion battery technology, aiming to offer a European-made alternative to lithium-ion batteries.
- SALZSTROM makes sodium-ion home battery systems that are safer, more reliable, and less likely to catch fire than lithium-ion ones.
The funding round was led by Erste Bank and other partners. SALZSTROM will also bring all its research work under a new unit called FlexCo.
This investment comes at a time when the world is looking for safer, more eco-friendly, and less import-dependent options to replace materials like lithium, cobalt, and nickel, which currently dominate battery supply chains.

Sodium-ion batteries are still new, but they're gaining interest because they last long, handle heat well, and don’t rely on rare or toxic materials.
Vienna-based SALZSTROM has already launched CE-certified sodium-ion battery modules. Their goal is to help Europe become less dependent on supply chains in places like China by using sodium, which is much more common and widely available.
Stefan Nolte, CFO and co-founder of SALZSTROM said, “We are convinced that the time is right for a safe, environmentally friendly, and fair alternative to lithium-ion batteries, This funding is a very strong signal and an essential milestone on our journey. We thank all our financing partners – especially ERSTE BANK – for their professional and committed support during this critical phase of building our company."
SALZSTROM is setting up a new R&D unit called FlexCo to speed up innovation, while the main company will stay focused on business and customers.
By separating product development from sales and operations, they aim to move faster while staying in touch with what users need.
Their funding comes as more money is being invested globally in next-gen batteries like solid-state, flow, and sodium-based systems. In Europe, there's a strong push for local battery production and supply chains.
About SALZSTROM
SALZSTROM makes sodium-ion home battery systems that are safer, more reliable, and less likely to catch fire than lithium-ion ones. These batteries use common materials, are less likely to fail, and work better in cold climates.
