Foundational Lands £8.2 Mn to Build a Global Satellite Positioning Network
Oct 1, 2026 | By Oliver Bennett

London-based space technology company Foundational has come out of stealth with £8.2 million in pre-seed funding. The company will use the funding to expand its satellite positioning infrastructure.
SUMMARY
- Foundational, a London-based SpaceTech startup, has raised £8.2 million in pre-seed funding.
- The company is developing high-precision satellite positioning technology using Satellite Laser Ranging.
- Founded in 2025, the company aims to build a global satellite positioning network for operators, insurers, and governments.
The investment will also support the further development of Foundational’s data platform. The funding round included Inflection, BACKED, Final Frontier, Adjacent, and Type One Ventures.
"Satellite Laser Ranging is the gold standard, and is one of the most precise measurement tools humanity has built, capable of pinpointing a satellite to within millimetres, but until now it's been too costly and too complex to use at scale. By bringing the hardware, ground network and data platform together under one roof, we're rebuilding a critical layer of space infrastructure for the commercial era, "said Hira Virdee, CEO and co-founder of Foundational.
Foundational will use the funding to grow its ground-station network and bring more of its space hardware manufacturing in-house. The company also plans to increase production of its retroreflector products.

The company will also invest in improving its data platform. Its long-term goal is to build a global network that provides positioning data to satellite operators, insurance companies, and governments.

Foundational was founded in 2025 by Hira Virdee and Dave Gooding. The company is developing technology to collect, process, and provide highly accurate positioning data for satellites.
Foundational’s technology can be used for satellite navigation and positioning, Earth observation, surveying, maritime operations, and aviation. The company aims to make precise satellite positioning easier to access and scale.
The company is working to automate and scale Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR). This method uses laser pulses sent from a ground station to a special reflector on a satellite. By measuring how long the laser takes to return, the system can determine the satellite’s position with millimetre-level accuracy.
