SUMMARY
- Leuven-based medtech company ReVision Implant has raised €4 million in an oversubscribed funding round from private investors, including European medtech operators and business leaders.
The company also benefits from EU grants worth nearly €4M and support from Plug and Play and imec.istart, bringing total disclosed funding to over €5.4M.
Founded in 2020 by KU Leuven researchers Dr Frederik Ceyssens and Prof Peter Janssen, ReVision Implant is developing “Occular,” a brain-based vision restoration system.
The device uses a camera-equipped headset to capture visual data and transmits it to an implant in the brain’s visual cortex, where ultra-flexible microelectrodes convert signals into light patterns the brain can interpret. This approach aims to restore functional vision regardless of damage to the eye or optic nerve.

The company’s key innovation lies in its thin film electrode technology designed to improve brain compatibility and enable thousands of electrode contacts for higher resolution visual input. Preclinical studies in primates have shown promising results in both safety and performance.
Frederik Ceyssens, chief executive of ReVision Implant, said the round marked the point at which the business pivots from pure development to operational scale-up. “We are investing in our own cleanroom environment to bring important manufacturing steps in-house, while expanding our team and advancing our regulatory compliance and clinical programme over the coming years,” he said. “At the same time, we are continuing product development and strengthening our collaborations with other medtech companies as we move closer to bringing our technology to patients.”
