autarkize funding news - German-based autarkize Raises €2.3 Million in Seed Funding

Climate tech startup autarkize has successfully raised €2.3 million in seed funding. The company plans to use this money to expand focusing on biogas technology and heat and steam generation.

SUMMARY

  • Climate tech startup autarkize has successfully raised €2.3 million in seed funding.
  • Autarkize is scaling a market-ready technology that produces high-quality gas made from methane and hydrogen, derived from waste, which has 3-4 times more energy density than previous methods.

Aim of autarkize

Autarkize aims to decarbonize industrial processes and create large-scale CO2 storage to help protect the climate.

Investors of the round

The funding round was led by High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF), with other investors including Fair Capital Impact Fund, Interface Capital, Innovation for Impact, Floris Capital, and business angels Lucas von Fürstenberg and Ulrich Blessing.

The technology developed by autarkize turns organic waste, like wood scraps, shells, and digestate, into renewable gas and certified biochar. The gas can replace fossil fuels in industries, while the biochar acts as CO2 storage and can also be used in agriculture and construction.

Each system can capture between 1,400 and 5,500 tons of CO2 each year and generate up to 10 GWh of renewable energy, significantly aiding efforts against climate change.

Michel Konder, CEO of autarkize, said, “Thanks to the financing, we can bring our systems onto the market on a large scale, offer our customers real added value and at the same time make an important contribution to climate protection. autarkize is excellently positioned to take a leading role in the energy transition.”

It’s systems are modular and can be installed in shipping containers, producing up to 2.5 megawatts. These solutions can be easily integrated into existing biogas plants and industrial setups and are particularly effective for decarbonizing heating networks in cities.

Maximilian Scholz, Investment Manager at HTGF, noted "We see enormous potential in the use of previously unused waste streams and biomass, which are converted into high-quality synthesis gas and biochar thanks to innovative pyrolysis technology. This solution not only creates climate-neutral energy, but also makes a significant contribution to CO2 reduction.”

Patrick Knodel, CEO of Innovation for Impact, "Solutions that enable humanity to operate sustainably within planetary boundaries and that are driven by determined founders with strong technical expertise. autarkize meets all of these criteria."

Michelle de Rijk, impact investor at the Fair Capital Impact Fund, also emphasizes: “autarkize’s technology is a crucial step towards greater resilience to the impacts of climate change. This investment fits perfectly with our energy transition program, which aims to deliver long-term positive change for people and the planet.”
