UK-Based adsilico Raises £10 Mn Series A to Expand AI-Powered Medical Device Simulation Technology

University of Leeds spinout adsilico has raised £10 million in a Series A funding round. The UK-based company develops AI-powered simulation technology that helps assess how medical devices perform across different virtual patient groups.

SUMMARY

  • adsilico raised £10 million in a Series A round.
  • The round was led by PXN Ventures, with participation from Northern Gritstone and Parkwalk.
  • Established in 2024 by Sheena Macpherson, Dr Nishant Ravikumar and Dr Zeike Taylor.

The funding round was led by PXN Ventures, with participation from existing investors Northern Gritstone and Parkwalk. The company will use the investment to expand its technology and support its growth.

Sheena Macpherson, CEO and co-founder of adsilico, commented: "Patients miss out on the chance of a life-saving device, or face uncertainty about whether it will work for them, because people like them weren’t represented when it was designed and tested. We give medical device manufacturers early insight into the impact of anatomical diversity when it can still shape the design and help avoid costly mistakes or harm to patients."

Founded in 2024 by Sheena Macpherson, Dr Nishant Ravikumar and Dr Zeike Taylor, adsilico develops technology that helps medical device manufacturers test how implants may perform before moving to clinical trials.

Clinical trials for devices such as heart valves and stents usually involve only a few hundred patients. This makes it difficult to represent the wide range of people who may eventually use these devices. Recruiting participants from different backgrounds can also take a lot of time and money.

To address this challenge, adsilico has developed Virtual Chimera, an AI-powered platform that creates virtual models of hearts and blood vessels using anonymised medical scans. These models help manufacturers study how medical devices may perform in different situations.

The platform combines generative AI with physics-based simulations to test devices across virtual patient groups. These groups can vary by age, sex, ethnicity, body size and medical conditions. This allows manufacturers to better understand how a device might work for different patients.

Virtual Chimera can help manufacturers choose suitable device sizes, identify patients who may face higher risks and improve clinical trial planning. By providing additional evidence alongside existing testing methods, the technology aims to spot potential problems earlier and support more focused clinical studies. It may also help reduce the need for animal testing.

The new funding will help adsilico improve its virtual heart models and expand into neurovascular devices, including flow diverters used to treat brain aneurysms. The company also plans to hire more staff and bring its technology into additional areas of medical treatment.
