XRlabs Raises €7.48 Mn Seed Funding to Advance AI-Powered Surgical Intelligence

London-based surgical technology company XRlabs has raised €7.48 million ($8.4 million) in a Seed funding round. The company was founded by surgeons and develops technology to improve surgical procedures.

SUMMARY

  • XRlabs has raised €7.48 million ($8.4 million) in Seed funding to advance its AI-powered surgical technology.
  • Founded in 2024 by neurosurgeon Dr. Ali Haddad, the London-based company develops AI software that helps surgeons plan and perform operations.
  • Former Medtronic CEO and Intel board chairman Omar Ishrak has joined the company as Chair of its Board of Directors.

The funding round was led by Playground Global, a venture capital firm based in Palo Alto that focuses on DeepTech companies. London-based HealthTech investor Eka Ventures also participated in the round.

Alongside the funding announcement, XRlabs revealed that Omar Ishrak has joined its board as Chair. Ishrak previously served as Chairman and CEO of Medtronic from 2011 to 2020 and was also Chairman of Intel’s board.

“The best physical AI companies come from people who’ve experienced a problem in their field firsthand and have the deep expertise to know how to fix it,” said Bruce Leak, General Partner at Playground Global.

“Our conviction is that the operating room is the next frontier for physical AI. Surgery generates extraordinary data, yet almost none of it becomes intelligence in the moments that matter most. This financing lets us change that at scale, moving Surgical Intelligence from landmark first cases to foundational infrastructure in every operating room,” said Dr. Haddad, founder and CEO of XRlabs.

XRlabs was founded in 2024 by practising neurosurgeon Dr. Ali Haddad. The company is headquartered at the London Institute for Healthcare Engineering, with a second office in Palo Alto, California. It develops AI software that works with the surgical systems hospitals already use.

The company's technology uses computer vision and deep learning to analyse live video from surgical cameras, data from navigation systems, and pre-surgery CT and MRI scans. It combines this information to give surgeons a real-time view of the patient's anatomy during an operation.

XRlabs says its platform has been used in more than 100 surgical cases across three continents. The technology aims to help surgeons better understand each procedure and make more informed decisions during surgery.

The company offers two main products: XRlabs SIM and SurgicalOS. XRlabs SIM turns standard CT and MRI scans into interactive 3D models that surgeons can use to plan and practise procedures. SurgicalOS brings these digital models into the live surgical view, helping surgeons use patient-specific information during an operation.
