SUMMARY

  • Edinburgh-based legal tech startup Wordsmith AI has raised $25 million in Series A funding, led by Index Ventures.

The company builds AI tools that help organisations deploy virtual legal agents and is riding the wave of change in the legal industry driven by generative AI.

Scottish Enterprise also joined the round, which now values Wordsmith at over $100 million—making it one of Scotland’s fastest-growing tech startups.

“For the first time, AI infrastructure can be embedded across companies, with fleets of agents that you can train to support every corporate function - cutting deal cycles, answering queries, and processing complex workflows,” said Ross McNairn, CEO and co-founder of Wordsmith. “Our Legal Enablement Platform is like air traffic control for GCs and in-house teams, helping them guide teams to the right decisions faster.”

Wordsmith AI already works with companies like Trustpilot, Remote.com, Deliveroo, Multiverse, and Docplanner. To keep up with its fast growth, the company plans to open new offices in London and New York later this year.

“We are helping GCs embed their legal intelligence across the business,” McNairn added. “Gone are the days of legal being seen as a blocker; it is now a revenue accelerator.”

Wordsmith is introducing a new role in legal teams called the "legal engineer." Unlike typical legal operations roles, legal engineers are responsible for training, deploying, and managing AI legal agents.

This role blends legal knowledge with technical skills, highlighting how the legal field is changing in the age of AI.

“We’re witnessing the birth of an entirely new role in legal: the legal engineer,” said McNairn. “These are the people training, deploying, and managing fleets of AI agents. We’re helping to re-skill an entire generation to do it.”

Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes added: “Private investment is an essential building block of a strong and growing economy… It is fantastic news that Wordsmith AI, a Techscaler member, has secured its $25 million Series A funding round in such a short space of time.”
