VERIGRAFT funding news - Gothenburg-based VERIGRAFT Raises €1.2 Million in Funding

Gothenburg-based biotech company VERIGRAFT has received a €1.2 million Eurostars grant to lead the PREPPER project, which aims to develop next-gen 3D-printed arterial grafts.

SUMMARY

  • Gothenburg-based biotech company VERIGRAFT has received a €1.2 million Eurostars grant to lead the PREPPER project, which aims to develop next-gen 3D-printed arterial grafts.
  • VERIGRAFT, based in Gothenburg, Sweden, was founded with research from the Karolinska Institute. Since 2014, the company has become a leader in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

The project aims to solve problems with current graft technology, such as a lack of human-donated materials, poor integration, and high failure rates. If successful, it could lead to human clinical trials and eventually commercialization, with possible uses beyond just vascular grafts.

Dr Raimund Strehl, CTO of VERIGRAFT said, “This Eurostars grant is a major milestone for VERIGRAFT and regenerative medicine. With PREPPER, we are accelerating the future of personalized tissue therapies, The global vascular graft market is projected to exceed $4 billion by 2026, and PREPPER positions Europe at the forefront of 3D bioprinting and regenerative medicine.”

The company is working on personalized tissues for diseases like heart and nerve conditions. VERIGRAFT plans to sell these custom-made tissue grafts worldwide.

Petter Björquist PhD, Chief Executive Officer said, “VERIGRAFT offers a unique, breakthrough technology in the field of advanced regenerative medicine. The technology gives the opportunity to personalize tissues and organs. This will be able to bring a paradigm shift in transplantation medicine,”.

It is currently testing its personalized vein, P-TEV™, in patients with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), a condition that causes swelling and ulcers in the lower legs. One patient in Spain can now walk without assistance and even attend football matches after the transplant.

The company is working with Readily3D SA (Switzerland), RISE (Sweden), and Sahlgrenska University Hospital (Sweden) to use 3D printing and advanced tissue engineering to create custom-made vascular grafts that work like natural arteries, offering better durability and easier integration than current synthetic options.

The PREPPER project is funded by the Eurostars-3 program, with additional support from the EU’s Horizon Europe research program. Eurostars is part of a partnership focused on innovative small businesses in Europe.

With this funding, it aims to transform regenerative medicine, offering new solutions for patients who need arterial grafts and helping Europe lead in 3D bioprinting technology.
