SUMMARY
- Leeds-based Uniphy, a company developing technology that could replace car dashboard controls and transform interactions with appliances, has raised £3 million to scale up for mass production.
The round is backed by existing investors NPIF II – Mercia Equity Finance (managed by Mercia Ventures) and Mercia’s own funds.
Founded in 2015 by microelectronics experts David Lomas and David Dean, Uniphy develops BeyondTouch®, a smart-surface technology that embeds user interfaces into 3D plastic or glass panels. The surfaces let users operate controls by touch alone, offering safer, more hygienic, and cost-effective alternatives to traditional buttons and car touchscreens.

As manufacturers shift from touchscreens to physical controls due to automotive safety and appliance reliability concerns, Uniphy provides a versatile alternative.
Its technology works with standard plastic or glass, supports haptic and voice feedback, is cost-effective, recyclable, and performs reliably even in wet environments ideal for cars, kitchens, and marine applications.
Jim Nicholas, CEO of Uniphy, explained: As humans, we spend much of our lives interacting with machines – on our mobiles, in our cars or our homes – but the limitations of current controls can make it a frustrating experience. Uniphy’s technology offers designers the freedom to create new, more intuitive interfaces and transform the way we engage with machines.
The technology has been successfully trialed by Hyundai and Grupo Antolin, who are exploring vehicle integration. The new funding will support Uniphy in developing its own integrated chip and miniaturising the BeyondTouch® system for mobile applications.
