SUMMARY
- Shield Space, a defence technology startup focused on protecting satellites from signal jamming and other threats, has raised £2 million to fund its first orbital test flight.
The round was led by the Midlands Engine Investment Fund II through Mercia Ventures, with participation from Twin Path Ventures, ROI Ventures, and P3A Ventures.
Space assets are considered critical national infrastructure underpinning essential services like communications and navigation.
However satellite jamming incidents have risen in recent years alongside concerns about hostile attacks. Additional risks include the increasing number of counterspace systems in orbit and the expanding volume of space debris.

Founded in 2025 Shield Space develops autonomous AI-driven guidance systems that enable satellites to detect threats and manoeuvre to safety without ground based intervention. This approach addresses increasing orbital risks where response times are limited by reliance on manual control from Earth.
Graeme Ritchie, CEO of Shield Space, stated that space infrastructure supports many aspects of modern life, and adversaries are increasingly exploiting uncertainty and slow response times in orbit.
Our ambition is to give the UK, NATO and its allies sovereign space capabilities to operate decisively in contested environments.
The new funding will support Shield Space’s next development phase, including preparations for its first orbital test flight. The capital will advance its autonomous AI guidance technology fund new premises in Lincoln, and expand the team enhancing operational capabilities ahead of in-orbit testing.
