SUMMARY

  • London-based Portia AI, which offers an open-source toolkit for building AI agents, has raised €5.1 million to help developers create reliable and secure AI tools.
  • Portia is a framework that helps developers build AI agents that are simple, reliable, and secure.

Emma Burrows, Portia AI’s Co-founder and CTO said, “AI engineers with deep expertise painstakingly navigate their way through the challenges of deploying reliable agents in production, but we want to democratise the solutions for all developers,”.

Mouawad and Burrows met while working at Stripe in London. Emma, who was Stripe UK’s CTO, built the local engineering team and previously developed the e-commerce system at Charlotte Tilbury. Mounir led key product launches across EMEA, including bank-as-a-service at Stripe and Google Pay in 30 countries.

Portia AI launched publicly in March 2025. Since then, they’ve started partnering with early users and growing their developer community. With the new funding, they plan to expand their team and roll out new features to make AI agents more reliable for real-world use.

Portia AI says AI agents are appealing because they can make decisions on their own using LLMs and also connect with apps and data. But many early projects don’t make it to full launch because teams can’t see or control how the agents behave in advance.

Without tools to track progress, step in when needed, or safely connect agents to existing systems, companies have limited control. This is a big issue in industries like finance or apps that face customers where rules, trust, and accountability are essential.

Juliet Bailin, Partner at General Catalyst said, “By seamlessly integrating AI agents, external tools, and human input – and by tackling challenges like JIT authorization head-on – we believe Portia AI is paving the way for a new era of intelligent automation, It also cannot be understated how brilliantly positioned Emma and Mounir are to build a generational company. Their vision is expansive, and they are well known among developers and business leaders alike for their ingenuity. We are exhilarated to be working alongside them.”

Mouawad adds “Companies want to build products and processes on agents that feel like transparent, collaborative partners rather than black boxes”.
