Berlin-based CleanTech startup C1 Green Chemicals AG has raised €20 million to launch its green methanol technology.
SUMMARY
- Berlin-based CleanTech startup C1 Green Chemicals AG has raised €20 million to launch its green methanol technology.
- C1 creates new, eco-friendly chemical production methods by rethinking chemical reactions, starting from the atomic level to large-scale production.
Of the total, €15 million came from investors, led by denkapparat, the family office of think-cell founders Markus Hannebauer and Arno Schödl.
Other investors like Planet A Ventures, Maersk Growth, SquareOne, Prof. Wolfgang Reitzle (former CEO of Linde), and Jim Hagemann Snabe (Chairman of Siemens) also joined the round. The remaining €5 million was secured through research grants.

Christian Vollmann, CEO of C1 Green Chemicals AG said, “Two ingredients are crucial for the successful commercialisation of scientific innovation: talent and capital. We are delighted that we at C1 have excellent access to both ingredients”,.
This technology changes a century-old chemical process and allows the use of non-fossil materials to produce green methanol. C1 believes that green methanol will be key to reducing fossil fuel use in the carbon-based chemical industry and could become the main fuel for net-zero shipping.
C1 predicts the green methanol market will grow to €183 billion per year by 2050, with the potential to save several gigatons of CO2 annually, which is a significant portion of global CO2 emissions.

Green methanol can help reduce fossil fuel use in three major industries: shipping, aviation, and chemical production. It also decreases reliance on foreign resources and makes these industries more resilient.
Markus Hannebauer from denkapparat said, “At C1, everything comes together perfectly: Cutting-edge research targeting an ecologically and commercially significant problem, pragmatic founders with a clear vision, and a team boasting impressive technological and commercial expertise. This is exactly the profile we are looking for as entrepreneurial investors. It was immediately clear that we would take the lead in this round”,.
C1 will use the funds to build the world’s first demonstration plant for homogeneously catalysed methanol. Plans are already in progress, and construction is set to begin this year.
About C1 Green Chemicals
C1 creates new, eco-friendly chemical production methods by rethinking chemical reactions, starting from the atomic level to large-scale production.
The first result from their quantum-chemistry platform is a new, unique methanol catalysis. This technology changes a century-old process and allows the use of non-fossil materials to produce green methanol.
