Oshen Raises $5 Mn to Scale Autonomous Ocean-Monitoring Robots

Plymouth-based robotics company Oshen has raised €4.27 million ($5 million) in a new funding round. The round was led by Lunar Ventures, with participation from AlbionVC, Twin Track, and Concept Ventures.

Oshen is building technology that can continuously monitor the world’s oceans. Its robotics systems are designed to collect important information from the ocean and create a long-term picture of changing conditions.

Oshen plans to triple its manufacturing rate to meet rising demand. Its technology is being developed for customers including navies, weather agencies, and ocean scientists. Several angel investors also joined the round as advisors.

“We’re making the ocean’s eyes and ears, and we need a lot of them. Seventy per cent of the planet is ocean and we can barely see any of it in real time. That’s not a sensing problem any more – the technology works, and it works in the worst conditions on Earth. It’s a manufacturing problem. So we’ve spent the last year turning C-Star production into something closer to a fast-food kitchen than a shipyard: fast, repeatable, and something you can stand up anywhere,” said Anahita Laverack, CEO and co-founder of Oshen.

Oshen was founded in 2022 by Imperial College engineers Anahita Laverack and Ciaran Dowds. The company develops robotics technology to help organisations collect information from the open ocean.

Oshen uses groups of autonomous robots called C-Stars. These small robots work together to provide continuous monitoring across large areas of the ocean.

C-Stars are powered by wind and solar energy, allowing them to operate for months without regular maintenance. They can collect ocean data and send it back through satellite communications.

Each C-Star is around 1.2 metres long and light enough for one person to pick up and place into the water. They can be launched from different types of boats and spread across large areas.

Oshen believes its robots could help navies monitor large areas of ocean more efficiently. Instead of relying only on a small number of expensive ships, navies could use thousands of lower-cost robots to track activity, including submarines, across wide areas.
