SUMMARY

  • Mistral AI has acquired Austrian startup Emmi AI in a deal described as “definitely not” an acqui-hire marking the French AI company’s continued expansion beyond foundation models into industrial applications.

Emmi AI develops physics-based AI models that generate industrial engineering simulations in seconds, significantly speeding up workflows used in aerospace, automotive, semiconductor and energy infrastructure design.

The startup had raised a record €15 million seed round in April 2025 and had already secured major industrial contracts reportedly with more than two years of runway and no pressure to sell.

The acquisition price has not been disclosed but was described as significant by sources. Emmi AI becomes Mistral’s second acquisition after cloud startup Koyeb, highlighting its strategy to expand into applied science and enterprise industrial systems across Europe.

Founded in 2024, Emmi AI is part of a growing wave of applied AI companies focused on solving complex engineering challenges such as computational fluid dynamics, thermal analysis and material stress testing.

Its team of over 30 researchers and engineers is expected to join Mistral’s science and applied AI divisions later this year.

Backed by investors including 3VC, Speedinvest, Serena, and PUSH VC, Emmi AI’s exit marks a fast turnaround for one of Austria’s most prominent seed-stage startups.

Arthur Mensch, co-founder and CEO, Mistral, said: "This strategic acquisition cements Mistral's leadership in industrial AI and positions us as the partner of choice for manufacturers in high-stakes sectors like aerospace, automotive, or semiconductors.

“It empowers our customers with a fully integrated platform to solve complex challenges, transform core R&D processes, and accelerate high-value innovation."

Johannes Brandstetter, Emmi AI’s co-founder and chief science officer, said: "At Emmi AI, we have dedicated ourselves to solving high-stakes physical challenges, ranging from the real-time stabilisation of power grids to the intricate simulation of injection molding and automotive safety testing.

“By integrating our expertise into Mistral’s world-class AI ecosystem, we are positioned to revolutionise core R&D."
