Let’s begin
Let’s begin the journey of Ida Tin who launched the women's menstruation-tracking app, Clue. Tin wanted to be an artist, but became an entrepreneur. So let's have a look at Tin's entrepreneurial journey that what issue led her towards entrepreneurship?
About Ida Tin
Tin wanted to become an artist and enroll in an art college, even she attended many art institutions in London and South Africa. But accidentally, she got a place on a business course.
Then from 2001 to 2004, Tin completed graduation from The Kaospilots, a progressive social entrepreneurship BA-level business school in Denmark. Currently, Ida and her two kids live in Berlin.
When Tin's entrepreneurial journey started
Tin was very confused about the facts that there had been so little innovation in family planning. She was struggling in figuring out that what was going on in her body related to her reproductive health. She says, "I had questions like, Can I become pregnant today? Have I gotten pregnant? What side effects will I have from different types of birth control—and even a simple thing like, When will my next period come?"
All of these questions led her to launch her own startup in order to address all aspects of reproductive health. She was determined to create a scientifically reliable source of information for women, from their first menstruation to pregnancy and menopause.
Tin began searching for a solution to this issue and launched Clue.
What's the clue?
Berlin-based startup Clue was founded by Ida Tin with Hans Raffauf, Moritz von Buttlar, and Mike Lavigne in 2013. This free period tracking software was created to empower women and menstruating individuals worldwide by enabling them to track their periods and harness the power of their bodies. Clue currently has over 10 million active users in more than 190 countries.
Users of the Clue app can track their period, PMS symptoms, fertile window, moods, cramps, food cravings, energy levels, exercise, weight, and the condition of their skin and hair. In addition, users can record their ovulation and basal body temperature, track their birth control methods, and set reminders to alert them when their next period is due.
She wanted to open up the conversation around this topic and help with additional research into this important aspect of female health. In the beginning, Clue had a hard time justifying the worth of what many think of as a 'niche' women's product.
The term "FemTech," which was first coined by Tin in 2016, refers to any technology or invention that tries to address health issues that exclusively or disproportionately affect women. Today, "Femtech" is a recognized category. Clue impacts women, science communities, and, most importantly, culture in general.
