Hedera-22 funding news - Belgium-based Hedera-22 Secures €2 Million in Funding

Hedera-22, a spin-off from ULiege and a pioneer in the development of an intelligent platform for the discovery of new biomolecules with bio-pesticide activity, secures €2 million in funding.

SUMMARY

  • Hedera-22, a spin-off from ULiege and a pioneer in the development of an intelligent platform for the discovery of new biomolecules with bio-pesticide activity, secures €2 million in funding.
  • Inspired by the potential that bioinformatics offers to comprehend the biomolecular mechanisms underlying soil bacteria's synthesis of active compounds, a group of scientists and academics at the University of Liège launched Hedera-22 in 2015.

This funding, which comes from subsidies from the Walloon Region together with a capital increase from its partners Aravis, Gesval, Noshaq, and K&E, is a part of the ambitious biomolecule discovery effort to support the European Farm2Fork project, which aims to reduce chemical pesticides by 2030.

The foundation of this project is the development of a sophisticated platform for the discovery of natural products that combines state-of-the-art molecular biology technology with exclusive machine learning-based predictive bioinformatics capabilities. This novel strategy seeks to increase the yield, diversity, and maturity of compounds found while streamlining the discovery process.

Valérie Renard, CEO of Hedera-22, commented: “The Ab-Initio platform, the first version of which will be available in early 2026, enables Hedera-22 to build up a vast library of molecules, which will be offered to actors in the bio protection sector. This initiative paves the way for numerous licensing and partnership opportunities, offering bio protection companies innovative, environmentally-friendly solutions for crop protection. We are pleased to announce that we have already made significant progress on this project, with the recent filing of a patent for our innovative prediction method”.

The goal of the €2 million funding round is to position Hedera-22 as a global leader in the discovery of novel natural compounds with bio pesticidal activity and to make a significant contribution to scientific advancement in this field by strengthening its team of experts, expanding its research and development efforts, and developing its bioinformatics tools.

Éric Brandt, Investment Manager for Noshaq, commented: “Noshaq is proud to support Hedera-22 in its ambition to develop new biomolecules. Thanks to its resolutely innovative approach, the company is successfully tackling many of the challenges facing the agro-industry. The AB-Initio project is showing impressive results that will be rapidly exploitable”.
