Dutch FoodTech Startup Greencovery Secures €1 Mn for Cocoa Upcycling

Dutch food tech startup Greencovery has raised €1 million in new funding. The company will use the money to scale its cocoa upcycling technology and move towards industrial-scale production.

SUMMARY

  • Greencovery raised €1 million in new funding to scale its cocoa upcycling technology.
  • The Dutch food tech startup turns cocoa side streams into useful food ingredients.
  • The funding will help meet demand for clean-label, natural and lower-sugar food products.

The funding round included ROM InWest, existing investor Brightlands Venture Partners (BVP), and a private investor. Greencovery has already tested its first commercial batches with key customers.

The company is now working with a strategic partner to increase its production capacity to 1,000 tonnes. The new funding will help Greencovery expand the production of its cocoa-based ingredients.

Greencovery produces cocoa fiber, cocoa extract and cocoa soluble fiber from cocoa side streams. These ingredients can give food companies an alternative when cocoa prices are high, while also supporting demand for clean-label products, natural flavors and lower-sugar foods.

”We have proven our separation technology across coffee, oil press cakes, and nuts, but cocoa is where we are reaching commercial scale. North Holland generates over 350,000 tons of food-grade side streams annually. Bringing ROM InWest into this round connects us directly to the region’s industrial network,” said Carlos Cabrera, Founder and Managing Director at Greencovery.

“Upcycling side streams into functional ingredients instead of incinerating or downcycling them directly supports a circular food system. Deploying this technology with an industrial partner in North Holland is a prime example of regional collaboration,” said Bas Kalshoven, Investment Manager at ROM InWest.

Founded in 2018, Greencovery is a Dutch food technology company that develops technology to turn food industry waste and side streams into useful ingredients.

The company uses a gentle separation process to recover ingredients from different food side streams. Greencovery says its technology can produce ingredients with a lower carbon footprint.

After successfully testing its first commercial batches with key customers, Greencovery is now increasing production with a strategic partner. The company plans to reach a 1,000-tonne production capacity and is developing a circular cocoa value chain in North Holland.

Greencovery is based in Zaandam, a city with a long history in food processing and the cocoa trade. The company aims to process cocoa side streams locally and turn them into valuable ingredients instead of sending them for low-value uses or disposal.
