SUMMARY

  • Hyperdrives, a DeepTech startup based in Munich developing high-performance electric drives at scale, has closed an oversubscribed €3 million pre-seed funding round.

The round was led by Rethink Ventures, with participation from First Momentum Ventures, SDAC, Acequia Capital, 2100 Ventures, Prototype Capital, and several angel investors.

With the fresh funding, Hyperdrives plans to capitalise on its strong customer interest by turning it into commercial projects, validating its technology for automotive-grade durability, and optimising its manufacturing processes for industrial-scale production.

Robin Renz, CEO & Co-Founder of Hyperdrives said: "Hyperdrives is turbocharging electrification with the best performance-to-cost electric motors on the market, designed for industrial-scale production. Over the past years and through three product generations, we have proven that breakthrough motor performance doesn't require exotic materials or new production concepts. With this new funding, we will expand our team to validate lifetime durability to automotive standards, accelerate our go-to-market, and prepare for industrial-scale production."

Founded in 2021, Hyperdrives has developed an innovative hollow-conductor motor cooling technology that enables high power density at significantly lower cost—without relying on rare materials or reinventing motor designs. Built using standard manufacturing methods, their motors are lighter, smaller, and more efficient, offering a standout performance-to-cost ratio for automotive, aerospace, and marine industries.

Michael Numberger, CTO & Co-founder of Hyperdrives said: "Our breakthrough is making hollow-conductor cooling work for mass production. By cooling directly inside the copper conductor, we achieve up to three times higher current density than today's motors more power in the same space, or the same power in a smaller, lighter package. With this funding, we can take our technology through the toughest automotive validation and prove it works not just in the lab, but at industrial scale."

Hyperdrives provides complete electric drive systems with integrated SiC inverters, working with project customers and partnering with OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers to scale production through manufacturing technology licensing.

Founded by a team blending high-performance motorsport experience with deep industry expertise, Hyperdrives has already built a strong commercial pipeline and generated over €1 million in revenue in 2024 all without external funding, according to the company.

Matthias Schanze, General Partner at Rethink Ventures added: "Hyperdrives solves one of the toughest challenges in e-mobility: combining record performance with true scalability. Their hollow-conductor platform is the first I’ve seen that delivers motorsport-level performance with automotive-level manufacturability and cost. That’s why we are excited to support the Hyperdrives team and lead this oversubscribed round.”

As OEMs work to reduce EV costs without compromising the customer experience, Hyperdrives aims to deliver technology that achieves both—making electric vehicles more affordable while enhancing performance and appeal for end users.

Andreas Fischer, General Partner at First Momentum Ventures said: "Many high-performance motor companies don’t make it because they require new production concepts or don’t scale. Hyperdrives takes the opposite approach: by building on proven automotive processes, they achieve revolutionary performance through evolutionary design. That’s why we are excited to back the team. We believe this is what it takes to scale electric mobility, also beyond automotive."
