Foldcast Secures €160K to Bring Recyclable Paper Moulds to Concrete Construction

Swiss construction technology startup Foldcast has secured €160,000 (CHF 150,000) from Venture Kick. The funding will help the company improve its recyclable paper mould technology for concrete construction and move closer to commercial use.

SUMMARY

  • Foldcast raised €160,000 from Venture Kick.
  • Foldcast combines paper moulds with design software and digital manufacturing.
  • The funding will support pilot projects, software development and production partnerships.

Foldcast is a spin-off from Università della Svizzera italiana (USI). It was founded by Fabio Amicarelli and Ena Lloret-Fritschi to develop a new way of making concrete structures using recyclable paper-based moulds.

The company combines its paper moulds with design software and digital manufacturing. This approach is designed to create concrete elements that use less material while still meeting construction needs.

Foldcast aims to address the environmental impact and high material use of traditional concrete construction. Concrete is responsible for around 8% of global CO₂ emissions, while traditional wood and metal moulds can make it harder and more expensive to create efficient, customised shapes.

Foldcast uses flexible paper moulds to create customised concrete parts. The moulds allow concrete to be placed only where it is needed for strength, helping reduce the amount of material used.

The company also has design software that helps engineers create and improve structural designs. Digital manufacturing is then used to produce the paper moulds needed for each project.

Foldcast is initially targeting real estate developers and large property owners that are focused on sustainability in Switzerland and other European markets. In the future, it plans to work with precast concrete manufacturers as production and licensing partners.

The new funding will help Foldcast move from testing its technology to entering the market. The company plans to complete two pilot projects, develop an early version of its software, build production partnerships in Switzerland and expand its sales and business development efforts.
