FluoRok Raises €26.64Mn Series A to Scale Safer Fluorochemical Production Technology

Oxford-based chemical manufacturing startup FluoRok has raised €26.64 million ($30 million) in a Series A funding round. The company has developed a patented process to produce fluorochemicals without using highly dangerous hydrogen fluoride (HF).

The funding round was led by Orano Ventures Fund and Supernova Invest, with additional investment from Bidra Innovation Ventures.

Existing investors Oxford Science Enterprises, BGF, GGF, Volta Energy Technologies and the University of Oxford also participated in the round.

“We back companies whose technologies support a sovereign, sustainable industrial transition. FluoRok has already shown its process works at pilot scale, and taking hydrogen fluoride out of fluorochemical production tackles a safety and supply problem the whole industry shares. We are pleased to join a strong group of investors supporting the team as it moves to industrial scale,” said Florian de Beauchaine, Investment Manager, Orano Venture Fund/Supernova Invest.

Dr. Gabriele Pupo, founder and CEO, FluoRok, said, ”We are thrilled to welcome new investors on our journey to fundamentally change how the world makes fluorochemicals, with safer chemistry and better economics.”

“Closing another oversubscribed round, backed by both new and existing investors from around the world, is a testament to the strength of our technology, the incredible commercial traction and the speed of execution of the FluoRok team. This funding will ensure FluoRok can swiftly move from start-up to scale-up and take a further step towards becoming a large-scale industrial manufacturer,” he added.

Founded in 2022, FluoRok is a spin-out from the University of Oxford. The company has developed a patented technology to produce fluorochemicals without using the traditional hydrogen fluoride (HF) process. For around 250 years, the industry has relied on this method, which uses highly dangerous chemicals and high-quality fluorspar, much of which comes from China.

FluoRok has developed a different process that uses mechanical activation and basic chemical reactions to extract fluorine from lower-grade minerals and industrial waste containing fluoride. This reduces the need for highly hazardous hydrogen fluoride and helps address supply and production challenges.

The company's process works under controlled conditions and uses standard industrial equipment that is already widely available. This makes the technology easier to scale and could help make fluorochemical production faster, safer and more cost-effective.
