SUMMARY
- Flomark, a spin-out from the Royal College of Art, has received £150,000 from the British Design Fund (BDF) and another £150,000 from the Imperial College Enterprise Fund (ICEF) to improve how fluid balance is monitored in hospitals.
Flomark aims to solve a major challenge in healthcare by offering a more accurate and easy way to track IV fluid flow rates and urine output.
Instead of relying on nurses to manually count IV drips, Flomark’s sterile, single-use flow meter fits standard gravity IV sets and shows the flow rate clearly using a red ball and scale, measured in millilitres per hour.

This helps save time and ensures fluids are given more safely and accurately.
Jonathan West, co-founder of Flomark, explains: The idea for our product came from years spent on hospital wards during my career as a design researcher in healthcare. I noticed that gravity infusions were often inaccurate, and fluid balance management was generally poor. This inspired me to dedicate my career to designing solutions that could make a real difference in patient care.
James Kinross, reader in surgery at Imperial added: Effective fluid management is critical for preventing complications such as hypovolemia or fluid overload which can significantly impact patient outcomes. Our new device offers clinicians precise, reliable control over fluid delivery, supporting safer, more responsive care at the bedside.
The funding will help Flomark launch its first product later this year and bring more devices to market in the future.
It will also support ongoing research and development to further improve the platform’s features.
Damon Bonser, CEO of British Design Fund, commented: Flomark’s innovative approach to solving a critical healthcare problem is exactly the type of enterprise we aim to support. The expertise and dedication of team to improve patient outcomes through design and technology are truly inspiring. We are excited to work closely with Flomark as they scale their business and bring their groundbreaking products to market.
