Scottish cleantech company Clyde Hydrogen has raised £1 million in funding for their decoupled electrolyser technology, which seeks to boost the amount of hydrogen produced affordably and safely at large scale.

Scottish cleantech company Clyde Hydrogen has raised £1 million in funding for their decoupled electrolyser technology, which seeks to boost the amount of hydrogen produced affordably and safely at large scale.

The ability to produce hydrogen on a big scale would reduce dependency on fossil fuels and enhance the use of alternative renewable energy sources. Decoupled Electrolysis is a novel method of producing hydrogen renewable energy that was created by University of Glasgow researchers lead by Prof. Mark Symes.

Decoupled Electrolysis, in contrast to existing electrolysis methods, allows the customer the unprecedented capacity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen in totally different reactors at totally different rates.

A redox mediator solution, which can store protons and electrons from the water oxidation step reversibly, is used to accomplish decoupling.

After being reduced, the mediator is sent to a different chamber where it reacts with the right catalyst to produce hydrogen. The creation of a demonstration is in progress, and these results have been validated at the lab scale.

Zinc, the University of Glasgow, and angel investors supplied the cash. The University of Glasgow's research labs will continue to develop the technology.

Paul Kirby, co-founder and CEO at Zinc, commented: "At Zinc, we believe in the importance of investing in deep science innovation to solve our most pressing environmental issues. Clyde Hydrogen represents exactly the kind of disruptive technology we look to support — one that has the potential to revolutionise the energy landscape and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. We're excited to be part of the team at Clyde Hydrogen on its journey to impact."

The company plans to use the pre-seed capital to grow its research and development staff, expedite technological development, and establish strategic alliances with other players in the energy industry. Clyde Hydrogen aspires to play a major role in helping Scotland achieve its lofty targets for green hydrogen and carbon neutrality.

About Clyde Hydrogen

Clyde Hydrogen methods is a cutting-edge technological startup creating ground-breaking methods for large-scale green hydrogen production. Unlike current electrolysers, their revolutionary decoupled electrolysis technology provides flexibility and opportunities.
