Certain Energy plans to build a supply chain for future commercial projects and prepare its technology for large-scale production and wider market use.
Certain Energy was founded in 2017 as a spin-off from Imperial College London. The company was previously known as RFC Power and develops long-duration energy storage systems.
Its technology stores electricity generated from renewable sources such as wind and solar. The stored energy can then be released when renewable power production is low.
The company’s technology is designed to make electricity grids more stable, reduce wasted renewable energy and lower the need for gas-powered plants that are used during periods of high demand.
Certain Energy uses manganese-based flow batteries for energy storage. Manganese is widely available, which could help make the technology more affordable than some other long-duration energy storage solutions.
