SUMMARY
- AQLAS, a group led by Italy’s Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica (INRiM), has received €2.5 million from the European Innovation Council’s (EIC) Transition programme to develop new quantum computing technology.
- AQLAS provides a reliable, high-precision laser module for atomic quantum computers.
The funding will be used to create a high-precision laser module for atomic quantum computers, an essential part of the growing quantum tech market.
Quantum computing needs frequency-stabilized lasers for tasks like cooling and controlling quantum bits. But current lasers are mainly designed for labs, which makes them difficult to scale and expensive for commercial use.
It aims to solve this by creating a smaller, cheaper, and more efficient laser module. The new module will be 4–10 times smaller and 2–5 times cheaper than current high-performance systems, making quantum computing more accessible and practical for the industry.

Dr Carlo Sias, Principal Investigator at AQLAS, expressed the vision driving the project: “Our AQLAS solution will facilitate access to high-quality hardware with lower pricing and easier use, thus encouraging the production of commercial quantum computers for the European quantum computing industry.”
INRiM is a public research organization that focuses on studying and promoting measurement science. It develops advanced standards and methods for measuring and related technologies.
As part of its work, INRiM helps set national standards for units of measurement, following international agreements on metrology, just like similar organizations in other countries.
