Ambio Raises €5.1 Mn in Seed Funding to Use AI to Simplify Recycled Plastics Procurement
Oct 14, 2026 | By Oliver Bennett

Helsinki-based startup Ambio has raised €5.1 million in Seed funding to make it easier and more reliable for businesses to buy recycled plastics. The company uses AI to help manage the entire procurement process, from finding materials to purchasing them.
SUMMARY
- Ambio raised €5.1 million in Seed funding, led by b2venture, with participation from Montis and Lifeline Ventures.
- Founded in 2023 by Tommi Bergström and Elmo Pakkanen, Ambio aims to improve trust in recycled plastic quality and make procurement more reliable.
- The funding will support its mission to increase the use of recycled plastics and strengthen European supply chains.
The funding round was led by b2venture, with participation from Montis and existing investor Lifeline Ventures.
“People in the industry like to talk about regulation and the EU. We are a startup, we cannot yet impact what happens in Brussels. What we can impact is the purchasing experience for the buyer. When you’re buying virgin plastics, you know exactly what you’re getting. When you’re buying recycled, you’ll know if it works when it’s running in your production line. Our goal is to predict if the material works or not before sampling even happens,” said Bergström, co-founder and CEO of Ambio. He believes widespread adoption of recycled plastics is held back more by trust than by regulation alone.
“We are backing Ambio not only because of the talented team led by Tommi and Elmo but also because of the compounding competitive moat the business is built on: a proprietary dataset on recyclate quality, a principal model that builds trust with buyers and sellers, and an agentic engine that turns every transaction and quality data point into improved matchmaking. We are convinced that Ambio will become the central marketplace for recycled plastics in Europe and beyond,” said Mathias Ockenfels, Partner, b2venture.

Ambio was founded in 2023 by Tommi Bergström and Elmo Pakkanen. The company is developing an AI-powered platform to help businesses buy recycled plastics more easily.
Its platform manages the entire purchasing process, from finding the right recycled materials to arranging long-term deliveries. This helps businesses make procurement faster and more reliable.
Recycled plastics offer several benefits to European manufacturers. They can support sustainability goals, offer cost advantages and help companies meet stricter environmental regulations. Demand for these materials is also growing as more customers look for sustainable products.
Ambio also highlights that using recycled plastics in Europe helps keep materials within the European supply chain. This can make supply chains more reliable and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels used to produce new plastics.
