SUMMARY

  • Wordsmith, an Edinburgh-based legal AI startup, has raised a $70 million (€60.2M) Series B round, bringing its total funding to $100 million (€86M). The round was backed by Highland Europe and Index Ventures, alongside other investors.

Founded in 2023, Wordsmith builds an AI-powered legal operations platform designed for in-house legal teams. The system helps organisations manage legal requests from across the business by capturing, routing, resolving, and recording every query in a single workflow.

The platform aggregates requests from tools such as email, Slack, Salesforce and Microsoft Teams, providing structured intake with ownership priority and context. It automates routine legal tasks while escalating complex matters to lawyers when required ensuring both speed and compliance.

Wordsmith is already used by more than 500 companies, including BT, Financial Times, Safelite, Trip.com, Canva, Sage, and Starling.

The new funding will support product development, expansion in the US market, and plans to grow the team to 300 employees by the end of the year as demand rises for AI-driven legal operations tools.

Ross McNairn, CEO and co-founder of Wordsmith said “Legal does not need another filing cabinet, and it does not need another copilot that simply helps one lawyer work faster. Wordsmith is the front door that does the work. Requests come in AI agents process the routine, lawyers approve what needs judgment, and every step is recorded as it happens. We are building the system Legal runs on: one place where work comes in, gets owned, gets completed and measured.”
