SUMMARY

  • Amsterdam-based coffee company Wakuli has secured €5 million in a Series A debt and equity round from ECBF and Rabobank, bringing its total funding to €9.25 million, including earlier support from ABN AMRO Sustainable Impact Fund and Icecat Capital.

Founded in 2019 by Yorick Bruins and Lukas Grosfeld, Wakuli empowers farmers with greater control and fairness in the coffee supply chain. Originally launched as an online subscription service, the company now operates 20 coffee bars across the Netherlands while continuing to expand its digital presence.

Wakuli’s approach links farmer income with climate impact, believing that regenerative agricultural practices are only possible when farmers have a stable, long-term living income from committed buyers.

Over the past five years, the company has partnered with over 16,000 farmers in 13 countries, including challenging regions like the DRC, Myanmar and East Timor, paying some of the highest prices in each area. This reliable income allows farmers to invest in sustainable climate-friendly farming methods.

Research by the nova-Institute shows that Wakuli’s regenerative methods produce just 0.30–0.60 kg CO₂ per kg of green coffee cutting emissions by 57–89% compared with conventional farming. Some partner farms even achieve net-negative emissions through carbon capture in trees and soil.

These results come from eliminating synthetic fertilizers, adopting shade-grown agroforestry, restoring soil health organically and reducing pesticide use. Wakuli says these practices are possible because farmers have the financial stability to prioritize long-term soil health over short-term yields.

The company will use the new funding to expand its coffee bars across the Netherlands and open its first international locations.
