Jun 26, 2024 | By Team SR
Helsinki-based Pest control startup Valpas raises €4 million in seed funding. With one in every 33 hotel rooms contaminated by passengers carrying bed bugs, hotels serve as "superspreaders" for bedbugs, costing the hospitality sector €15 billion yearly. Bedbugs are carried by luggage, enter rooms fast, and multiply.
SUMMARY
- Helsinki-based Pest control startup Valpas raises €4 million in seed funding.
- Valpas is the hospitality standard employed by an increasing number of high-end hotels for permanent bed insect protection.
Pesticide-based solutions are also become less and less effective, not to mention harmful to the environment, since bedbugs will soon develop complete resilience to all pesticides on the market. In a few years, bedbugs will cause a worldwide public health crisis if a pesticide-free alternative is not found.
A special technological material design attracts bed bugs, which are drawn to the CO2 people exhale while they sleep. After that, in-app image identification is provided by Valpas' IoT and AI-enabled mobile web app to help locate and eliminate the pests. There is not a single chemical in the solution.
Working with more than 300 hotels under upscale brands like Accor Hotels, The Luxury Collection, Design Hotels, ARP-Hansen, and Bob W in more than 40 destinations, including Europe, Mexico, and Japan, we are starting a revolution among hoteliers by introducing a new "hospitality standard" guarantee that ensures guests have permanently bedbug-free and pesticide-free rooms.

Martim Gois, CEO and Co-Founder of Valpas said: “No travel or home insurance covers the cost and pain of a bed bug infestation at home. Nearly every infestation at home comes after a night in a hotel or rental bed. By staying at a Valpas affiliated hotel, travellers know the room they get is clean and no matter where they go around town the hotel keeps them safe.”
Together with Activum SG Ventures, Finnish Industry Investment, Canon Marketing Japan MIRAI Fund, Icebreaker VC, Houghton Street Ventures, Rockaway Ventures, and Morrow Ventures, Zenith VC led the fundraising round.

Erik Lindblad, Partner and CEO at Zenith VC said: “Valpas is addressing a significant and growing industry challenge with a seamless and effective solution. We believe it is a clear leader in this segment and has the potential to become a global category winner."
The investment will mainly go towards increasing manufacturing of Valpas' technology, which guarantees that rooms are kept bed bug-free around-the-clock. This will allow the company to satisfy the increased demand that comes with an international sports and travel season that includes events like the European Football Championship and the Olympics in Paris, among other events.
The money will also be utilised to establish important alliances with online travel agencies and booking engines, which will facilitate travellers' identification and selection of bed bug-safe lodging.
