Central to the initiative is Common AI CIC, a UK community interest company co-developing foundational AI IP with members, supported by CommonAI Compute Ltd, which provides cost-effective GPU resources.
Both entities will be supported by a shared Digital Commons repository, offering world-class resources to ecosystem members under a time-limited embargo.
Dr. Gavin Ferris CEO of CommonAI CIC, notes that AI startups and SMEs increasingly struggle to access the computing power, technology, and strategic resources needed to compete successfully on a global scale.
“CommonAI’s innovation platform, shared IP and industry expertise will play a critical role in levelling this playing field, unlocking new growth opportunities and protecting the long-term economic future of both the UK and Europe.
‘Structuring and governing our engineering organisation as an unconflicted Community Interest Company (CIC) ensures that the interests of our members are protected while encouraging collaboration and maximising the potential of the UK AI ecosystem.’
Sir Andy Hopper, Board Chair of CommonAI CIC, argues that Big Tech’s control over large-scale AI models and infrastructure limits startups’ access to this growing opportunity, while even larger enterprises struggle to balance innovation initiatives with the resources needed to maintain and power their core business operations.
“By enabling ‘Virtual BigCos’ and unleashing the latent power of our entrepreneurs – and working in partnership with leading engineering talent, research institutions and universities – businesses of all scales in our economy can access the capabilities and expertise they need to thrive on the global stage.”
Following the launch of the CommonAI platform, Anthemis plans to establish a “High Assurance AI” fund to back UK and European startups deploying AI in highly regulated and complex sectors, including financial services, healthcare, critical infrastructure, and defense.
This fund is the first in a series of CommonAI-branded funds designed to extend traditional VC support, offering portfolio companies both capital and access to the transformative technology resources of the CommonAI platform.
Amy Nauiokas, Founder and Group CEO of Anthemis, notes that the platform provides a collaborative space where stakeholders can unite to drive meaningful impact.
“We are building an AI ecosystem to drive forward action – one that clears the barriers to accessing the opportunities presented by a new wave of innovation and combines deep expertise, cutting-edge technology, cheaper compute and access to smart, supportive capital.
Getting this right is critical to the UK and Europe’s economic future and we’re excited about the prospect of working alongside our partners and members to build the next generation of industry champions.’
