SUMMARY

  • UK-based mobile game developer Tripledot Studios has announced it is buying AppLovin’s mobile gaming studio portfolio in a deal worth around $800 million, making it one of the biggest mergers in the mobile gaming industry.

The deal is split between cash and equity, meaning AppLovin will become a minority shareholder in Tripledot. This move will greatly grow Tripledot’s global reach and team.

Once the deal is approved and completed, Tripledot will own 12 studios across 23 cities, with over 2,500 employees and 25 million daily active users. Its yearly revenue is expected to hit nearly $2 billion, putting it among the top five independent mobile gaming companies worldwide by revenue.

Tripledot already has offices in London, Warsaw, Minsk, Barcelona, Jakarta, and Melbourne, and the new studios will add locations in 17 more cities across North America, Europe, and Asia.

“This is a big step towards achieving our goal—taking us from being a high-performing challenger to a true global leader,” said Lior Shiff, co-founder and CEO of Tripledot Studios. “It gives us additional scale, diversification and access to the best talent globally. We’re thrilled to welcome these incredible teams to Tripledot.”

This acquisition highlights the growth of Europe’s gaming industry. Tripledot is now joining the ranks of successful European mobile gaming companies like Rovio, King, and Supercell, showing that the region continues to play a big role in a field once led mainly by the U.S. and East Asia.

Tripledot has also been profitable since its second year, which is rare in today’s market, where high user acquisition costs and platform fees often make it hard for companies to stay profitable

AppLovin, a U.S.-based mobile tech and marketing company, had originally bought these studios as part of its machine learning strategy. Now, it’s leaving game development to focus more on its main business: advertising technology and software.

“Seven years ago, we began acquiring gaming studios to help train our earliest machine learning models. However, we've never been a game developer at heart,” said Adam Foroughi, co-founder and CEO of AppLovin. “I have watched Lior build his company from the ground up… and give me incredible confidence they are the right partner to help these studios thrive going forward.”
