SUMMARY

  • Sweden-based Yangi, a technology company focused on sustainable packaging solutions, has secured SEK 40 million (approx. €3.61 million) in funding from the Swedish Energy Agency’s Pilot and Demonstration Program.

Headquartered in Eskilstuna, Sweden, the Swedish Energy Agency is a government body dedicated to advancing renewable energy, enhancing energy efficiency, supporting technological innovation and tackling climate change.

The funding will enable Yangi to build its first full-scale demonstration plant, a key milestone in its journey to commercialize fibre-based packaging solutions globally.

Founded in 2014 by Anna Altner, Yangi is pioneering innovative applications of cellulose in sustainable packaging. The company has developed Cellera, a dry-forming technology that shapes cellulose into 3D packaging formats without the need for water-intensive processes.

Rooted in Danish R&D from the 1990s, dry-forming technology has been significantly advanced by Yangi over the past decade, transforming it into a scalable, industrial solution for packaging manufacturers.

Yangi is now focused on scaling cellulose-based packaging and collaborating with industry partners to bring its technology into commercial production.

Yangi’s Cellera is a dry-forming machine platform that transforms cellulose pulp into 3D-formed, fibre-based packaging using a combination of airlaid fibre processing and dry-forming techniques. The resulting packaging is compatible with existing recycling systems.

The platform operates without added process water and consumes significantly less energy, enabling up to 70% lower CO₂ emissions compared to traditional packaging methods, according to the company.

Designed for continuous production, Cellera offers high material efficiency, consistent output, and supports quick changeovers and flexible production runs. It is also built to run with minimal staffing, making it scalable and cost-efficient.

Yangi has showcased the environmental benefits of its Cellera fibre-based packaging platform, highlighting that the technology eliminates process water use, consumes 75% less energy than wet moulding, and cuts CO₂ emissions by 70% compared to plastic packaging.

The system uses 100% renewable, FSC-certified fibres and is designed to integrate seamlessly into existing recycling streams. Yangi positions Cellera as a sustainable alternative to thermoformed plastics and wet-moulded fibre packaging.

According to the company, dry forming offers faster cycle times, flexible production configurations, and greater material efficiency than other methods.

Yangi also notes that while plastic packaging is versatile, it remains fossil based and poses significant recycling and waste challenges whereas wet-moulded fibre solutions are limited by slower production speeds and higher resource consumption.

Yangi is expanding the application of its fibre-based dry-forming technology across various industries, including takeaway food packaging, beauty and cosmetics, and consumer electronics.

For takeaway and single-use items, Yangi provides fibre-based alternatives to traditional packaging. In the beauty and cosmetics sector, the technology enables packaging designs that enhance branding and product display. For consumer electronics Yangi offers protective packaging with versatile surface finishes.

The company continues to innovate and collaborate with partners to develop new products and applications for dry-formed fibre packaging.

Currently, Yangi’s technology supports laminated barriers, customized material formulations, embossing and debossing, and undercut designs.

Ongoing developments focus on increasing shape complexity, deep-formed products, printed and colored surfaces, and packaging solutions that extend product shelf life.
