SUMMARY
- AI startup SpAItial has come out of stealth with a $13 million seed round led by Earlybird Venture Capital, along with Speedinvest and several notable angel investors.
SpAItial is developing AI that understands the 3D world in a physics-consistent, space-and-time-aware way, much like humans do.
Unlike traditional models that generate images pixel by pixel, SpAItial’s Spatial Foundation Model (SFM) works directly with 3D structures. This makes it possible to seamlessly connect virtual and physical environments — useful for realistic game design, robotics navigation, urban planning, and industrial automation.

The funding will support the scaling of its first SFM, which can generate photorealistic 3D worlds from just one image. Early demos show promising applications in entertainment, robotics, and digital twins.
SpAItial was started by a team of experienced tech leaders and deep tech experts: Matthias Niessner – Professor at TU Munich, co-founder of Synthesia, and former researcher at Stanford, Luke Rogers – Previously worked at McKinsey and Cazoo, Ricardo Martin-Brualla – Formerly at Google, involved in Project Starline and 3D Shopping, David Novotny – Formerly led 3D asset generation at Meta
They bring strong backgrounds in AI, 3D technology, and business strategy.
“Current AI models generate images pixel by pixel — great for snapshots, but not for immersive, coherent worlds,” said Matthias Niessner, Co-Founder of SpAItial and Professor at TU Munich.
“At SpAItial, we’re building AI that’s grounded in space and time from the start. Our spatial foundation models are a game changer for any application that depends on 3D understanding.”
Today’s 3D creation tools are slow, outdated, and hard for non-experts to use. SpAItial is building new technology to fix that—making 3D design faster, easier, and more accessible. Their goal is to open up new possibilities in AR/VR, eCommerce, and autonomous systems by simplifying how 3D content is created.
“We couldn’t be more excited to back SpAItial’s team of world-class technologists,” said Dr. Andre Retterath, General Partner at Earlybird.
“While text, image, and video have seen massive generative AI progress, 3D remains stuck in the pre-AI era.
SpAItial’s unique depth in both academic research and real-world product development positions them to bring spatial intelligence into reality.”
With the new funding, SpAItial will grow its team by hiring experts in AI, graphics, and 3D systems. The goal is to build strong core technology and speed up work on their first Spatial Foundation Models.
They’ll also focus on turning early prototypes into scalable systems and improving their models with advanced physics. This will help them launch more commercial pilots in areas like entertainment, digital twins, and robotics.
About SpAItial
Founded in 2024, SpAItial is building a new type of AI called Spatial Foundation Models (SFMs). These models are designed to understand and create both the look and behavior of real and virtual environments. Unlike current AI models that focus on text, images, or video, SFMs work directly with 3D spaces—more like how humans think and interact with the world.
