SmartyPlants raises £190K to develop smart plant care technology

Feb 4, 2026 | By Kailee Rainse

SmartyPlants, a UK-based tech startup focused on plant care, has raised £190,000 from the British Design Fund (BDF) to continue developing its smart sensor system for houseplants.

Looking after indoor plants can be difficult because of issues like irregular watering, poor light, and not knowing how healthy a plant really is. SmartyPlants aims to solve this by using data to help users understand what their plants need.

Founded in 2023 by Ben Beavers, the company builds smart sensors that track important factors such as soil moisture, light, temperature, humidity, and nutrients. When used with a mobile app, the system provides real-time updates to help users take better care of different types of indoor plants.

SmartyPlants focuses on making plant care easier by reducing guesswork and offering clear, simple guidance. By turning sensor data into easy-to-understand insights, the startup helps plant owners react quickly to changes in their plants’ environment.

Founder Ben Beavers says the company was created to make plant care simpler for people who want healthy plants but don’t always know what actions to take. The technology is designed to give users more confidence in their everyday plant care.

With the new funding, SmartyPlants plans to further improve its technology and software to make plant care even more simple and reliable for everyday users.
