SAIA Agrobotics: European Entrepreneurs Built A Multi-Million Dollar Enterprise, Focused On Revolutionizing The Way Greenhouse Growers Operate
Feb 24, 2025 | By Startuprise

European entrepreneurs — Ruud Barth and Bart van Tuijl — are on a mission to revolutionize indoor agriculture through innovations in robotics and automation. Netherlands-based SAIA Agrobotics is solving labor issues in the agriculture field by offering automated planting and harvesting solutions.
The journey started when Ruud and Bart had a significant gap in the market. With a ground-breaking idea, the founders set out to address the gap.
The best part of their story is that instead of overlooking the problem, they saw it as a world full of opportunities, and with a clear goal of revolutionizing indoor agriculture, they built a multi-million-dollar worth business called SAIA Agrobotics.
Innovative Minds Behind Startup
Meet the founders of a multi-million dollar worth company, SAIA Agrobotics: Ruud Barth (CEO) and Bart Van Tuijl (CTO). Both are the innovative Minds behind the startup SAIA Agrobotics, a food and beverage manufacturing platform that builds greenhouse robots.

Building Solutions For Growing Need
Driven by their strong academic backgrounds, both of them were determined to pursue something that would create a meaningful and positive change. So, SAIA Agrobotics was born as a spin-off from Wageningen University and Research to address the growing need for advanced automation in Horticulture.
Barth felt the need for it when he saw that Traditional agricultural practices in a greenhouse environment often face challenges such as labor shortage, inefficiencies, and the increasing demand for sustainability.
Additionally, the global demand for healthy fruits and vegetables is increasing due to population growth and the expanding middle class. At the same time, climate change and rural depopulation are negatively affecting yields and food security in open-field farming. There is an urgent need to transform agricultural practices to meet both production and environmental goals.
So, the founders were determined to address these issues and worked around the clock through innovations in robotics and automation. By harnessing cutting-edge technology, they developed autonomous robotic systems capable of performing essential tasks like planting and harvesting.
