Readily Diagnostics Receives €811K Gates Foundation Grant to Develop Affordable STI Test

Swedish diagnostics company Readily Diagnostics has received a grant of around €811,000 (9 million SEK) from the Gates Foundation. The company develops affordable point-of-care medical tests.

The funding will help Readily Diagnostics develop a low-cost test for three common sexually transmitted infections (STIs): chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis.

The grant will support the early stages of the project, including testing how the technology works, preparing patient samples, and detecting antimicrobial resistance. The company will also create a roadmap for developing the complete test.

“Readily is committed to delivering accessible molecular diagnostics. A diagnosis should not depend on where you happen to live,” says Liza Löf, CEO of Readily Diagnostics. “This grant from the Gates Foundation lets us show that an accurate STI test can also be simple and affordable enough to use anywhere. That is the whole point of the technology we have built.”

Founded in 2022, Readily Diagnostics was spun out of Uppsala University in Sweden. The company develops fast and accurate diagnostic tests for infectious diseases.

The company’s new project focuses on three common sexually transmitted infections: chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis. Together, these infections cause hundreds of millions of new cases every year.

In many low- and middle-income countries, people are often treated based only on their symptoms because reliable testing can be too expensive, too slow, or not available.

This can lead to infections being missed and antibiotics being used when they are not needed. It can also allow infections to spread and increase the risk of antibiotic resistance.
