SUMMARY
- Oyster Bay, a venture firm based in Hamburg, has raised over €100 million for its second fund, which is focused solely on the future of food. The fund's investors include the European Investment Fund (EIF) and KfW.
The food sector is a $10 trillion industry, making up about 12% of global GDP and 40% of the workforce. However it also contributes to one-third of global emissions, water scarcity and biodiversity loss. Despite this, only 8% of climate-focused venture capital is invested in food and agritech, highlighting a significant investment gap and untapped potential.
Oyster Bay's founder and Managing Partner, Christoph Miller, points out that while food may sometimes be seen as a passing trend in venture capital, it is actually one of society's most pressing long-term challenges.

Oyster Bay's first fund was ranked in the top 10% of European VC funds, supporting companies like Oatly, AirUp, True Gum, and GoodBytz. Fund II will follow the same strategy, investing in entrepreneurs who are making a positive impact and transforming the global food system.
We are not traditional financial investors, but entrepreneurs with a successful track record. Less than 0.1% of startups that apply to Oyster Bay make it into the portfolio – our involvement is a seal of quality, adds Felix Leonhardt, Managing Partner of Oyster Bay.
As large food companies face supply-chain challenges, startups focused on areas like sustainable inputs, alternative proteins, and data-driven logistics are becoming more important. Miller highlights that improving efficiency, transparency, and resilience in supply chains will be key to the sector's transition.
Oyster Bay identifies significant opportunities in traceability technologies, AI-based demand planning and solutions that enhance supply-chain resilience, seeing these innovations as essential drivers of economic growth.
