Oslo-based ONiO has raised €5 million to scale up production of ONiO.zero – the world’s first general-purpose microcontroller unit (MCU) that can cold-start using less than 1µW and operate fully on ambient energy.

SUMMARY

  • Oslo-based ONiO has raised €5 million to scale up production of ONiO.zero – the world’s first general-purpose microcontroller unit (MCU) that can cold-start using less than 1µW and operate fully on ambient energy.

The funding round was led by Stockholm-based node.vc, with Helsinki-based Maki.vc joining as co-lead. Existing backers EIC Fund and MP Pension also participated and increased their investment.

“ONiO represents the kind of breakthrough technology we look for at node.vc,” said Mårten Skogö, Partner at node.vc. “Their ability to power a microcontroller entirely from ambient energy is not only technically impressive – it’s fundamentally changing how we think about sustainable IoT. The team has proven that the technology works in real-world applications, and now it’s time to scale. We’re excited to support ONiO as they bring this game-changing chip to market.”

Founded in 2016, ONiO is a fabless IoT company focused on ultra-low-power microcontrollers. It has developed what it calls the world’s most power-efficient MCU, ONiO.zero, which runs on as little as 22µW/MHz and operates entirely on ambient energy—no batteries needed (though it can work with them when required).

The recent funding will help ONiO ramp up volume production of ONiO.zero, a wireless microcontroller that can cold-start from under 1µW and harvest energy from solar, RF, thermal, or piezo sources.

ONiO’s mission is to reduce battery waste and provide simple, sustainable power solutions for manufacturers.

The entire system—including a RISC-V CPU, radios, power management, memory, and security—lives on a single chip, replacing what once required dozens of components.

ONiO.zero has already been tested in products like solar keyboards, electronic shelf labels, air quality sensors, asset trackers, and crop-monitoring soil sensors. The company is now expanding production and providing dev kits and reference designs to support custom applications.

“All that’s left to do is to make a lot more of these super chips,” says the company.

About ONiO

ONiO is a fabless IoT company focused on building ultra-low-power microcontrollers. Its flagship product, ONiO.zero, is one of the most energy-efficient MCUs in the world, running on just 22µW/MHz and powered entirely by ambient energy.

Designed to work with signals from sources like RF, solar, thermal, or piezoelectric energy, ONiO.zero is a general-purpose microcontroller that can operate without batteries or significantly extend battery life. It enables smarter, more efficient, and eco-friendly IoT device designs.
