About Barry McCann

Meet Barry McCann, the founder and CEO of NUA Surgical. Barry has 20 years of commercial and fundraising experience in the healthcare, not-for-profit, and professional sports sectors. He holds a B.Com and an M.Sc in Medical Device Innovation, both from the University of Galway, along with diplomas in Anatomy, Project Management, and Online Marketing. While pursuing a full-time fellowship in obstetrics and gynecology at BioInnovate Ireland, he was inspired to embark on his entrepreneurial journey, which led him to create NUA Surgical.

Inspiration behind startup:

Galway-based NUA Surgical originated from BioInnovate Ireland in Galway. At the BioInnovate, McCann was focused on obstetrics and gynecology. During this 10-month program, he connected with his co-founders, Marie-Therese Maher and Padraig Maher.

At this time, McCann faced an unmet clinical need in women's healthcare. His own experiences as a father inspired him to address unmet needs in women's healthcare, particularly in improving outcomes for both women and newborns. This led him to begin his entrepreneurial journey in 2019.

With his co-founders, Marie and Padraig, McCann has worked to develop innovative solutions to prevent deaths during cesarean deliveries. McCann has always wanted to bring positive change to the healthtech industry, and his commitment motivated him to develop the SteriCISION C-section Retractor, which improves access and visualization during cesarean deliveries.

What does NUA Surgical do?

Cesarean sections are the most frequently performed major surgeries globally. Over 30 million Caesarean procedures are being conducted annually. To address this problem, NUA Surgical is focusing on developing innovative surgical solutions in obstetrics and gynecology. The company's vision is to ensure safer births, provide the best care for women, and equip medical teams with the right tools for the best outcomes for both mothers and babies.

NUA Surgical is dedicated to bringing innovation to women's health. The company has developed the SteriCISION® C-Section Retractor. It is a groundbreaking, hands-free, self-retaining device designed to improve surgical access during C-sections. Unlike traditional handheld retractors, which require additional personnel and limit the surgeon's workspace, the SteriCISION effectively holds abdominal tissue in place which provides unobstructed access for the surgical team.

This innovative, ergonomically designed, and patented device ensures fast, adjustable, and safe retraction. It enables clinicians to efficiently deliver the baby, repair tissue, and critically identify potential bleeds. As a single-use, sterile instrument, the SteriCISION aims to reduce the risk of surgical complications to deliver significant benefits to patients, clinicians, and the broader healthcare system.

NUA Surgical has gained global recognition for its innovation in maternal health since emerging from the prestigious BioInnovate Ireland program at the University of Galway. The company won the MedTech category at the 'Global Tech For Good' competition and earned double honors at the National Startup Awards in 2022. NUA was a double winner at the National HealthTech Innovation Awards in 2023 and was named 'Emerging MedTech Company of the Year' at the Irish MedTech Awards.
