SUMMARY
- Biomaterials company Modern Synthesis has raised $5.5 million in funding. Founded by former Adidas designer Jen Keane and synthetic biologist Dr. Ben Reeve, the company uses material science to turn nanocellulose—a natural byproduct of fermentation—into eco-friendly textiles and coatings.
- Modern Synthesis is a biotech company based in London that creates new materials using bacteria.
Their bio-based products replace animal leathers and plastic textiles, offering new possibilities for designers. The fashion industry faces financial risks as over 35 new sustainability regulations are coming.
Even though there’s demand, sustainable textiles make up less than 5% of the $1 trillion global textile market. With these new regulations coming, fashion brands that don’t update their materials could face big financial challenges.

Research also shows that by 2030, brands will face a shortage of 133 million tonnes of low-impact raw materials needed to meet new climate and decarbonisation rules.
Modern Synthesis helps brands reduce the shortage of sustainable materials by allowing them to adjust their raw material mix. This also gives them new options for different looks, feels, and functions in their products.
The company makes bio-based materials by turning nanocellulose, a natural fibre from fermentation, into strong and high-quality alternatives to animal leather, vegan leather, and plastic-coated textiles.
Their special process uses advanced material science to harness the strength of nanocellulose, which is 8 times stronger than steel at the nanofibre level. The final products are free from harmful chemicals and have a lower environmental impact than traditional textiles.
The funding round was led by Extantia Capital, with support from Artesian and Collaborative Fund. This investment will help Modern Synthesis increase production and serve more fashion brands on their growing waitlist.
CEO and co-founder of Modern Synthesis, Jen Keane, shared: “Having demonstrated unprecedented material performance without plastic, we’re primed to offer the fashion market a material solution that can both captivate consumers and unlock a path to circularity. This investment gives us the capacity to work with more brands as we continue to uncover new use cases for the technology.”
Yair Reem, Partner at Extantia Capital, comments: “The first thing that struck us was how this material rivals traditional leathers in look and feel, but can also offer something entirely new that excites designers. Modern Synthesis represents the future of industry—delivering better, more cost-effective, and resilient materials that also happen to be green.”
Alexandra Clunies-Ross, Partner at Artesian Investments, adds: “Our investment decision was driven by the company's potential to revolutionise traditional manufacturing processes, and drive real impact at scale.”
