Mistral funding news – Challenger AI Startup Mistral Secures €600Million in Funding
Jun 12, 2024 | By Team SR
France-based challenger AI startup Mistral secures €600million in funding for its bid to rival industry leader OpenAI. Along with longtime backers Lightspeed, Andreessen Horowitz, Bpifrance, and BNP Paribas, General Catalyst led the round.
Microsoft did not take part; it had funded Mistral in the past but now partners with OpenAI. With €1 billion raised, it is clearly the tech champion of Europe. This raise is the largest all-purpose AI capital injection that Europe has ever seen. The largest shareholders of Meta and Deepmind, co-founders Timothée Lacroix Guillaume Lample and Arthur Mensch, are still in place.

Mensch told Financial Times that Mistral's software needed "little more than 1,000" of the powerful graphics processing units (GPU) chips that are needed to train AI systems. Mensch was speaking particularly about the amount of computing power needed by Mistral. Given that business executives are rushing to develop ever-more-efficient models, the remarks are prophetic.

According to persons close to the company who spoke to FT, it's most recent fundraising, which consists of €468 million in stock and €132 million in debt, values the mid-2023-founded business at €5.8 billion including the fresh money raised. A large number of its AI systems are open source, which means that anybody can review or modify their source code.
Mensch said, “It remains a capital-intensive market, The more capacity we have, the more people we can get into our team to break the barriers of artificial intelligence.”
