SUMMARY
- Healthcare startup MDA – Medical Decision Alliance has raised €3.3 million in seed funding.
Founded by life science experts Dr. Gunter Trojandt, Annett Christ, and Daniel Bauer, the company has built software that captures the techniques and decision-making of top surgeons and turns them into AI-powered support tools.
Surgical robots are being used more and more to make operations more precise. But many key decisions during surgery still depend on the surgeon and can sometimes be wrong.

MDA is working with top surgeons and surgical robot makers to create smart algorithms that guide the best steps to take in different patient cases.
In the future, these intelligent tools will support surgical teams—like having an expert surgeon by their side. This will help both new teams learn faster and ensure better outcomes for patients.
MDA is focused on training the next generation of surgeons. They are creating digital training programs that share expert knowledge, stay up to date, and are available anytime—making surgical education more accessible and modern.
“Together with MDA, we have digitised all key aspects of our surgical skills and developed an AI-based workflow engine called Virtual Proctor. Other clinics and doctors can now access it and benefit from our 20 years of experience - as far as I know there is no other system like it,” says Professor Markus Graefen, Medical Director of the Martini-Klinik at UKE GmbH, the Prostate Cancer Centre at the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf.
Alongside its current focus on robotics, MDA’s Virtual Proctor will also act as a digital platform for MedTech partners to showcase their products for specific medical uses. It will highlight insights from experts who already use these tools daily.
This helps new users quickly gain hands-on knowledge, as the platform offers clear concepts, visuals, and practical content based on proven standards—bringing real value to clinics.
Dr Lena-Sophie Schütter, Investment Manager at HTGF, comments: "MDA's well-coordinated team combines experience, expertise and a strong network - qualities that already characterised the success of their previous start-up. Through the structured development of a unique reference database, they are laying the foundation for AI-based training and decision-making algorithms. In this way, they are creating the conditions for greater safety, comparability and cross-clinic standards in robotic surgery - with the aim of providing better care for patients. "
