SUMMARY

  • Materials Market, a UK-based online marketplace for building materials, has raised £2 million in funding.

The money will help improve the platform’s technology, grow the team, and find new ways to make it easier and faster for customers and suppliers to connect. This supports the UK government's goal of building 1.5 million homes by the end of its current term.

The UK building materials industry is worth around £40 billion, but it’s outdated and disorganised. There are thousands of local suppliers, but not much digital technology is used. This leads to confusing prices, slow processes, and frustration for buyers.

The industry also struggles with high staff turnover, stressful call centre work, long training times, and a lack of multilingual support, which is a problem for global companies.

Materials Market helps fix this by letting buyers connect directly with over 750 supplier branches. Their customers range from DIY homeowners to large construction firms.

With rising material costs and a £14 billion trade gap in 2023, there’s a growing need for smarter, more efficient tools in the UK construction supply chain — and Materials Market hopes to lead that change.

Tom Profumo, Partner at Active Partners, commented: "The building materials market is highly fragmented and inefficient and has yet to experience the level of disruption seen in other industries through digitisation. Materials Market is changing that with its innovative approach and proprietary technology, seamlessly connecting buyers and suppliers through its online marketplace."

James Mackenzie, Non-Executive Director at Materials Market, added:

"The building materials sector is one of the last major industries to undergo true digital transformation. What Materials Market is doing - using technology to simplify and scale a highly fragmented supply chain - is exactly what the industry needs."
