Mantle8 has received a €2.06 million grant from the European Union’s Just Transition Fund to advance the development of its natural hydrogen exploration technology platform in Grenoble.

SUMMARY

  • Mantle8 has received a €2.06 million grant from the European Union’s Just Transition Fund to advance the development of its natural hydrogen exploration technology platform in Grenoble.

Founded in 2024 by Emmanuel Masini, Mantle8 develops geoscience-based technologies aimed at identifying natural hydrogen resources and analysing hydrogen-generating systems beneath the Earth’s surface.

The company holds several exploration permits linked to potential natural hydrogen reservoirs and is working to advance technologies that could support future hydrogen production.

Its programme builds on long-standing geoscience research in Europe particularly in Grenoble aiming to convert scientific discoveries into scalable industrial technologies.

The grant will support the continued development and scaling of Mantle8’s technology platform. This includes expanding the HOREX pilot project in Comminges establishing the APoGeH geochemistry laboratory in Grenoble, upgrading the GeoLogix system to enhance subsurface imaging, and further developing the Simul8 modelling platform.

The company also plans to recruit specialised researchers and carry out techno-economic studies with strategic partners.

All programme activities will take place in Grenoble and the wider Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. While the funding does not directly finance exploration campaigns it aims to accelerate the industrial development of Mantle8’s technologies enabling more efficient and precise deployment in future projects.

About Mantle8

Mantle8 is a geoscience startup focused on discovering naturally occurring hydrogen reservoirs. Using advanced exploration technologies and decades of geological expertise the company applies a bottom-up approach to identify and analyze subsurface hydrogen systems aiming to unlock natural hydrogen as a scalable, low-carbon energy source for the future.
