SUMMARY

  • Limenet, a Milan, Italy-based startup developing Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) solutions, has raised €7M in funding.

Backers of Limenet include CDP Venture Capital and Fassa Bortolo. The company plans to use the funds to strengthen its leadership and accelerate the development of solutions aimed at reducing CO₂ emissions.

Led by CEO Stefano Cappello, Limenet develops technology that enables the production of decarbonized lime. This lime can be used to remove CO₂ from the atmosphere through the ocean alkalinity enhancement method.

In this process, CO₂ is stored in the sea via a natural chemical reaction that converts it into bicarbonates, essential elements found in seawater. Bicarbonates have a buffering effect that helps counteract ocean acidification, which, according to the Copernicus report in October 2025, is one of the planetary boundaries already exceeded.

Stefano Capello commented, “What really excites us is the vision we are building: we don’t just want to decarbonize a difficult industrial sector like lime; we want to demonstrate that it is possible to transform a process that currently emits CO2 into an active tool for removing it from the atmosphere.”
