The investment strategy of Italian Founders Fund is centred on taking the lead in pre-seed and seed rounds of creative firms run by Italian entrepreneurs, whether they are based in Italy or overseas. The fund also has the ability to target foreign startups who are looking to expand into the Italian market.
Lorenzo Franzi, a former partner at Global Founders Capital, is the leader of IFF. Lorenzo has an impressive global professional history that includes experience founding a digital firm and working in investment banking. Following several years overseas, Lorenzo has returned to Italy to work with a collection of the most accomplished Italian founders to launch the fund.
Lorenzo Franzi, founding partner at Italian Founders Fund, commented: “A new chapter has begun for the Italian Venture Capital ecosystem. We’ve brought over 100 founders onboard, including key figures from Italy’s entrepreneurial and innovation sector, and we also have representatives from the firmly established business owner/investor community. This positions us to set up a truly integrated system that can promote and support Italy’s promising ecosystem both at home and on the global map. We are convinced that by unifying the country’s ambitions and talents, we’ll help shape our future economy for the better.”
As observed in other nations where the existence of venture capital funds powered by private resources and the expertise of successful founders is a clear signal of a maturing and developing ecosystem, Franzi views the establishment of this fund as a key sign of maturity for the Italian digital ecosystem. The fund is unique on the peninsula in that it takes a collaborative community approach, and it is managed by Koinos Capital SGR.
Apart from financial support, IFF provides its portfolio firms with knowledge, experience, patience, and connections with a wide range of very skilled investors. Founder investors actively engage in the identification and analysis of investment prospects inside the IFF, providing the investment team with a deeper grasp of the industry and the difficulties target firms face.
IFF will act as a preferred entry point for foreign funds wishing to invest in Italy by rising to the top as the network for aspirational Italian entrepreneurs, allowing co-investment from the outset.
Marco Morgese, CEO of the management company KOINOS Capital SGR, added: “This type of founder-led fund is already prevalent in markets where innovation is at the forefront of industrial development policies. We see them in the USA with Founders Fund, which has been around for almost 20 years, as well as in Europe where 10x founders operates in Germany, Galion.exe in France, ByFounders in Scandinavia, and Dutch Founders Fund in the Netherlands.”
